Shaping the Future of Food with Biotechnology: PLANTOMYC at RISE

On 26–27 August, representatives from the food industry, research institutions, universities, VINNOVA – Sweden’s innovation agency – and the research council Formas gathered at RISE in Örnsköldsvik to discuss how biotechnology can help shape the future of food.

The two-day event provided a rich programme of inspiring presentations, dynamic panel discussions, and valuable networking opportunities. Participants explored the challenges and opportunities facing the agri-food sector, particularly in the context of climate change, sustainability, and consumer demand for nutritious and resource-efficient food.

A closer look at RISE’s Bioeconomy Arena

One of the highlights of the event was the study visit to RISE’s new pilot hall, part of the Bioeconomy Arena. This state-of-the-art facility plays a crucial role in testing and scaling innovative biotechnological solutions under industrial conditions. By bridging the gap between research and market application, the Bioeconomy Arena is helping accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable and competitive food system in Europe.

Spotlight on PLANTOMYC

Among the exciting initiatives presented during the event was PLANTOMYC, a Horizon Europe project coordinated by RISE. The project aims to develop new sustainable protein alternatives by combining plant-based proteins with mycelial protein biomass derived from circular substrates.

“With PLANTOMYC, we want to show that it is possible to develop new sustainable protein alternatives by combining plant-based proteins with mycelial protein biomass from circular substrates. Our goal is to create products that are not only more resource-efficient, but also taste good and meet consumer expectations for quality and nutritional content,” explains Vaskar Mukherjee, project manager at RISE and coordinator of PLANTOMYC.

Towards a sustainable food future

The discussions held in Örnsköldsvik reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between research, industry, and policy to meet the pressing challenges of the agri-food sector. Initiatives like PLANTOMYC demonstrate how biotechnology can unlock innovative pathways to achieve a more sustainable, resilient, and consumer-driven food system.

PLANTOMYC is proud to contribute to this transformation and to be part of the wider European efforts towards a greener and more resource-efficient future.
